Many people believe that bamboo rods need extra care compared to graphite or other composite material flyrods. I am not going to deny that this is partially true, but waxing your bamboo fly rod after each fishing trip or not beeing able to play a fish the way you can with a “plastic” rod is absolutely not true.
It really differs not much from the care of a “plastic” rod. I wrote down the most important things for taking care of your bamboo fly rod.
Pointing your rod towards the fish and hold it in an approximate 30 degree angle will make you use the whole rod instead of just the tip. I often see people holding their rod in a close to 90 degree angle when playing a fish but how natural and logic this may seem it will only (over) stress the tip.

What finish will you use for your flyrod? One of the questions that has been asked and discussed many times. Varnish before you wrap, or not, impregnating, polyurethane or a tung oil based varnish to name just a few choices.
One of the biggest problems with finishes is that in time cracks in the varnish will often arise at the ferrules and guides, allowing moisture to creep under the wraps. This alone is not that much of a problem but it creates an uneven moisture balance in the cane which - is - a problem. This uneven balance causes weak spots and in a worst case scenario even causes the rod to break.
Read more about this and how I go about it in this article about finishing bamboo fly rods.
